What is a VCD Burner?

A VCD burner is basically a disk drive. A disk drive is a device that allows your computer to read CD’s that are inserted. The only difference of a burner from a normal disk drive is that VCD burners have the ability to copy files that are saved from the computer’s hard drive such as movies and music and be duplicated into a blank cd that is inserted in your burner. In short, this is a device we use to copy files to and from cd’s. Burner’s replaced the old device called floppy disk drives although their function is almost the same.

How does it work?

This type of technology uses laser light or electromagnetic waves, this laser light is near the light spectrum. These laser lights are the one that gives burners the ability to process data reading and writing to and from compact discs. It is done by selective heating of the organic dye layer with lasers. The laser creates marks on the CD. The marks is where the files are put in. VCD burners are also called writers. Below are the common types that burners use to do its functions;

  • Compact Discs or Cd-r
  • DVD’s, DVD-r or DVD+r
  • Blu – ray discs or BD-r

History

The VCD burners of today evolved from the invention of laser disks. Laser disk was first seen in 1972. It was a 12 inch video disk. Everything were analog back then that laser disks were read like that of cassette tapes. 1975 was the year where the compact discs that we see today were first used and it was in audio form. The first burner was invented in 1987 by Sony and the rest is history.
